Born in Miyagi prefecture and raised in Osaka and Kyoto. Influenced by her grandfather, a violinist and music teacher, and her father, a classical pianist and manager of Kyoto University Alumni Chorus Group, Choco made her first professional stage debut as a solo artist at her age of 17 and regularly made appearances in a variety of shows based in the Kansai area in Japan, while attending high school in Kyoto.

In 1998, Choco went abroad to further her musical knowledge in the U.S.. After she lived in San Francisco and attended Los Angeles Music Academy in Pasadena, California, she moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music, where she dual majored in the Songwriting and Professional Music. While attending college, she has worked with numerous Jazz, Funk and Hip-Hop musicians inside and outside of school and toured with Jr. Holt, the son of legendary reggae singer John Holt around the East Coast region.

After graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, Choco moved to New York City in 2003 and started performing as a Singer Songwriter at the renowned venues including CBGB, Webster Hall, and Knitting Factory.
